We all have our fears. We fear Covid, poverty, death, not to mention rats and lizards. But fear is a powerful force. It can work against us or for us. Fear of Allah always works for us and fear of things other than Allah works against us. Fear of Allah gives us the power to overcome others, whereas fear of things other than Allah gives them the power to overcome us.
Read the interesting anecdote below:
Once, Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) set off on a journey. On the way, he saw a crowd and inquired about it. He was told that there was a lion blocking the way and the people were afraid of it. Ibn Umar got off his mount and strode up to the lion. He twisted the lion's ear and patting him on the neck, drove him off the path. Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) was right when he said ‘Only a thing which a person fears can overpower him. If he does not fear anything besides Allah, nothing will overpower him except Allah. And a person is turned over to only that thing which he strongly believes can bring him benefit or harm. If a person strongly believes that benefit or harm can only come to him from Allah, Allah will never turn him over to anything else.’” Ibn Asakir
